MOTHERHOOD - A woman's unique identity

A lot of times, I sit back and think what it means to have been born as A WOMAN. I read articles, eccentric articles, which state the boon and bane of being a woman. There are snippets of cover stories given by the influential women across the globe that inspire the rest of us. The fundamentals of feminism questioned every other day. The grave act of slavery on some, the rewarding and proud achievements of the other's in any form - it can go on and on.

But for me, off-late, as I have been maturing as a woman in her 30's, the one thing I round off to - is the beauty of MOTHERHOOD.

The divine power bestowed on a woman to create a life inside of her has been fascinating, intriguing, empowering, overwhelming and nurturing at the same time. The art of being able to caress a piece of flesh and blood as if it was your own is a feeling beyond expression.

I was having a chat with a friend who was in her 3rd trimester and was developing cold feet despite having a supporting family (from both sides), a caring partner and after reading the most recommended book for all the expectant mother's "What to expect when you're expecting" - 'Will I Be A Good Mother?', she asked. The most instinctive reply that I gave her was, "having a baby is a testimony of the love you share with your partner. The very feeling when you hold the baby in your hands for the first time, that's when you'll know what it means to be in love with your partner and having to create a life together. There is no rule book for being a perfect mother. It's the link between your emotional and logical side in a given situation which is right for your baby that will determine how good a mother you are and you'll be. It's an act of balance. You won't be right all the time, you won't be in the best of mood all the time - that's ok. Trust me, it will all be worth it."

That instinctive answer still linger's on my mind even to this day. There was one thing I realised that night when I spoke to her, the completeness of being a woman is in being a mother. Whether you're blessed to be a biological mother or you decide to adopt a child to provide him/her a home beneath your wings or lend yourself to surrogate a child - it's fundamentally the feeling of calling someone your own. That feeling when your baby reaches out to you amidst a crowd is most reassuring and warm which cannot be substituted with anything. There are times when I land into a situation, where I start to doubt myself in terms of making a right decision. At that moment, I try to think like a mother and have a role play in my head being both the mother and the daughter. More often that not, I tend to take the right decision. Maybe this is what a heart of a mother does to a mind of a woman.

Some experiences, be it your own that you go through or be it the one's that you hear of your close friends and family, shatter you from within. These are the ones, that make you or break you emotionally, so much so that, you start to question the fundamentals of right or wrong. At times, when you want to pursue what it right at the expense of those around you, tell you the righteousness of being a human. The grave mistakes that you do with your sanity in place, those are the hardest to get over with.

P.S: Dedicated to all the expecting mother's and all the mother's out there. Be proud of making and giving lives. It's a blessing! A Privilege!

Shukran Dubai

As a child, I grew up listening to the fascinating tales of The Arabian Nights. The incredible lavish lifestyle that was described in the tales of the history, the iconic Arabian Belly dancing and of course the famous story of Ali Baba and The 40 Thieves transcended me from the city nights to the dreamland of rich and varied heritage. Cut to 30 years later, when I finally had the opportunity to travel to this magnificent city, it was time to live and experience the childhood memories.

Dubai is the most glamorous and one the most progressive emirates in the UAE. Luxury lifestyle is synonymous to this city.  So when I decided to visit and explore this place, my excitement levels were at its peak. I had heard so much about Dubai that I really wanted to take it slow when it came to exploring the city.

The first pit-stop had to be the gorgeous Burj Khalifa. Standing tall at 830m high, this sky scrapper will for sure leave you spellbound with its architecture details and magnanimity. There are two pit-stop to Burj Khalifa  - One at the 124th floor and the other at the 148th floor which has an observation deck. Another interesting fact about the tallest structure is that you get to the 124th floor in an elevator in about 60secs! The entrance to Burj Khalifa is through the luxurious Dubai Mall. If you are a brand addict and do not mind in splurging, this mall is for you. The brands that you see on your favorite celebrities are available all under one roof.

Burj Khalifa - at the break of dusk

The parkland of Burj Khalifa has an artificial lake. Take a ride in the Abra at the dusk in the lake to witness the beautiful Dubai Fountain Show.

If there is anything adventurous that I have done in my life till now, then The Hot Air Balloon ride will definitely be on the number one spot. This was how I wanted to visit the desserts of Dubai, get a close look at the Falcon show and do the dune bashing. Whether you're with a partner, in a group or just a solo traveler; the hot air balloon ride offers the mesmerizing ride at the crack of dawn, seeing the sunrise from the balloon, float through the cool breeze of the dessert and finally landing on the dune - once in a lifetime experience.

Visit The Gold Souks of Dubai if you're the type who loves jewlery. They have something in store for all age groups and the designs are infinite.

You can't not go to Atlantis  The Palm when in Dubai. This place is another world altogether. With a theme park, luxury residences; you can just go on and on about Atlantis. Luxury is an underrated term for this place. I just loved every bit of time spent here. The people, the place, the beautiful cars driving through the drive ways, the restaurants - my favorite Gordan Ramsay has his restaurant here; I could just go on with the list of delight.
The Atlantis

Getting around in Dubai is extremely easy and tourist friendly. There are the Dubai Rails that are very well connected to most of the tourist locations. The taxi's are also plenty in number although a bit heavy on the pocket. In case you plan to pub hop or stay out late, cabs are recommended as the traffic rules and laws are very strict in Dubai.

I left a little early before The Dubai Global Village festivities kick started. But if you can plan your trip around the next Global Village Festival to witness the culture and heritage of different countries in one place, you surely want to be in Dubai during this time.

I was also hoping to see Shah Rukh's residence in The Atlantis while I was there, but I was denied access (what a bummer!!).

My next trip to Dubai will definitely be around The Dubai Shopping Festival so that I can shop till I drop. Until then, Shukran Dubai!

Truly Asia - Malaysia and Singapore

For a very long time I wanted to visit Malaysia and Singapore - a lot was heard about these two tropical destinations.

I was overjoyed to plan an exhaustive week long itinerary with the must-see places. Although Malaysia was limited to just a couple of tourist attractions, Singapore had many more places to visit. It would not be wrong to call Singapore as efficient but an expensive city.

I landed in Kuala Lumpur late in the evening and drove straight to my hotel Furama Bukt Bintang in Kuala Lumpuer - very comfortable room. The first day was to explore the local city in their local transport. The best way to see and feel the local culture of any city is by interacting with the aam janta. Due to heavy showers the previous night, the weather was apt for the day scouting. I took the hop-on-hop-off bus in Malaysia which had decent pit stops at the most visited places. The only place I was really looking forward to see in Malaysia was The Petrona Towers. The spectacular structure of the two towers standing tall at a height of 452m is a view you can't take your eyes off. The elevator gives two stops - one at the 44th floor with a connecting bridge at the two towers and one on the 88th floor which has an observation deck. The views from both the spots will leave you spell bound.
Not just in broad day-light, the tower leaves you speechless when the lights are lit during the night. It's hard to not fall in love!

Night - The Petrona Towers

The next day, I headed to the 400 million years old Batu Caves. This is one the very famous Hindu Shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan. The statue of the Lord stands tall at 42m high. If you are the type who loves your cardio and would not want to miss it even while you travel, well then the 300 odd steps of the Batu Caves are exactly what you need. Its a hell of a task to climb up but once you do and enter the caves, you are in for some gorgeous range of caves. The only thing to watch out for are the monkeys en-route to the top.
The Batu Caves

Malaysia being in the equatorial region, the temperature is fairly high hitting 30degrees with humidity all around the year. So make sure you get all dressy in your summer dresses in bright vibrant colours.

I then took an early morning flight to Singapore. My first impression of The Changi International Airport was WOW! The airport is extremely well organised with easy access to information that you otherwise scramble to find. I had requested for a late check-in and The Furama Hotel staff (yes, I booked them too in Singapore) politely obliged.

I loved Singapore as a city - extremely well planned, I had a metro station and a bus station close to my hotel. #TravelTip - always book yourself in a place that is close to a public transport station. This will definitely help when you have to budget explore the city on your own or in time of crises.

The stop at The Marina Bay, The Merlion and The Singapore Flyer are the attractions you wouldn't want to miss. I was most happy about having a capsule to myself in The Singapore Flyer which I missed in London.

The Merlion

Do take a stop in the evening at Gardens By the Bay. You will not be disappointed by the musical light show.

You visit Singapore and you don't have a day to visit The Universal Studio at The Sentosa Island, you would miss out on a lot of fun. I was like a girl in the candy store at The Universal Studios., spoiled for choices among-st the meet-and-greet session with your theme parks of Madagascar, Puss and the Boots, Jurassic Park to a name a few.

If you like the sea, then The S.E.A Aquarium is a must visit. You're sure to find beautiful fish species that make you in awe of the marine life forms we have. The best is The Dolphin Show to see and experience their world up-close.

Singapore also has waxed some of the famous personalities in Madame Tussauds Singapore. Get to be interviewed by Oprah, have your breakfast at Tiffinays or score a goal with Ronaldo. You have it all. If you want to feel home and patriot - a namaste from Modi will bring you back to India in a jiffy.

If you have an extra day, indulge in some shopping. Singapore offers you great brands and equally unique street shopping experiences. You can buy a whole new bag to fill in what you have shopped, just the way I did! :)

If you want to have a great first time international destination travel experience, Singapore is the place to be. Fun guaranteed!

Watch live to Live

R-C-B….R-C-B…R-C-B; This is what I was welcomed to as I entered through the Gate-13 of the M.Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium in Bangalore to get my first-hand experience at a live cricket match. My two favorite teams pitting against each other – RCB and KKR. Here’s a secret, both these teams are my favorite because (a) RCB is a home team (b) KKR is owned by the man who I have adored since I was in my 5th grade in school. Well if you still don’t get it and by any means thought it was Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta, then think again! It is only because of The One and The Only Shah Rukh Khan (will be referred as SRK henceforth ;)). It’s been a dream since the IPL season kick started 11 years ago that if I ever watched a live cricket match, it would be between RCB and KKR. It happened to be true!

After crossing the multiple security check-points, I was welcomed by two beautiful ladies who stopped me to ask who I would be rooting for that night. I wanted to pick KKR, but I dint! I wanted to be true to my home team and decided to support RCB with all my heart. My friend (oh, who by the way, was super generous to lend me a ticket to the VIP Grand Terrace) chuckled and re-confirmed if I was sure.
The VIP Grand Terrace Ticket

It dint take me long to realize why cricket is celebrated so religiously in India. The grand VIP terrace was exuding grandeur in its true form. While I settled in, I saw the stadium fully packed and the people rooting for RCB with great enthusiasm. I was star-struck right from the start. Being privileged to get a Grand Terrace ticket is a dream. If not all the current players, you get so see the ex-players walking in and out, the current players’ wives at arms-length reluctantly exchanging smiles.
From the gallery of the VIP Grand Terrace

I wasn’t expecting this level of lavish ambiance. The buffet spread and the drinks at the bar were to die for. As the match picked up pace with RCB batting first in the innings, the craze was out of the world. The vibe in the stadium, the energy level not just amongst the players but the spectators was unmatched. It felt like people had come down just to see the partnership between Kohli and AbD. It was a treat to watch them play. They definitely met every fans expectations.

RCB put a great score of 205 for KKR to chase. As the 2nd innings began, the hopes of the people in Bangalore was sky high. The expectations on RCB, most importantly on Virat to lead the team to the much needed victory was obvious in the eyes of each spectator.
RCB and KKR during the strategic time-out

If only we had emerged victorious that night, it would have been an icing on the cake to my first time experience. One little secret, I also was hoping that SRK would be there that night and I would get a selfie with him. While that still remains an un-fulfilled dream, but hey, I did manage to get a selfie with Mr.Sunil Gavaskar. For now I will make do with that and the exhilarating experience I had with my first ever live cricket match. YAY!!

Until next time it’s only R-C-B…R-C-B….R-C-B.

Anchoring Life

Life surprises everyone when you least expect it. That's exactly what happened on one summer evening with a bunch of friends over a drink. Now I'm uncertain if I was dared into this act of bravery or if my friends were drunk so much so that they threw this challenge at me.

Whatever be the case, I decided to get inked.

What one forgets is, deciding to do is one thing, actually getting it done is a different ball game all together. From that evening, I started researching on what tattooing is, how's it done etc etc. As much as I spent my time on the "how painful would it be" part, I dint really spend any time on the former - which is Researching. That is simply because I dread injections. Anything to do with a prick in my conscious self, I run in the opposite direction. I am paranoid of getting vaccinations or IV although in the recent past I have had many tours to the hospitals getting exactly the same.

Note that I mentioned pricking in my conscious being. When I reached out to the tattoo Artist, I unabashedly mentioned to her that I would gulp a few glasses of wine and come over to her studio to get the tattoo and be oblivious to the pain and get home. But, I was disappointed yet again because liquor is a strict no-no.

My fear still prevailing, I asked her what would be the intensity of the pain that I might have to endure. She in all her tranquility stated "Don't you worry, it wouldn't be half as painful as the pain you endure for your threading". As much as I felt relieved hearing that, I wouldn't settle in. I asked my friends who had got themselves inked by sitting through the whole process for hours and they had a different view point all together.

Cut to current state, I had the picture in mind and the body part I wanted to get inked. By mustering all the courage that I can ever imagine and with my support system whom I fondly call my lifelines; I landed at the tattoo studio. There was another round of reality check and convincing needed for me in the studio as well. After an hour of all the talks and confidence build up, I lay there on the tattoo bedding with all the equipment and the ink around me ready to get inked for life!!

Amidst all the fear, I still managed to tell my friend to click pictures! Yeah, well you don't want to miss the moments of the act of bravery put out there for you to take a look at later.

I wouldn't say it wasn't painful, but what I enjoyed the most was I had never ever in my wildest dreams thought of getting a tattoo done. The first one always holds a special place in your heart and life and body of course :)

What's the significance of the tattoo in my life? It's the anchor of my life and very close to my heart!!

Will I get inked again? Well, never say never!!

Chickpet and Raja Market - My official wedding gift to a friend!!

"Don't wear high street fashion if you want to bargain." These were the exact words which my friend fired at me when we decided to go on wedding shopping to Chickpet and Raja Market (before you imagine anything out of ordinary, it was for my friend's wedding).

The places I am sure are synonymous to all Bangaloreans who have a wedding function happening in their household or even otherwise. I have heard of these places as well but never had a first hand experience of it. This time, I finally decided to shed the fear and take a stroll on the streets. I don't think I would have done that without this friend of mine.

We took an auto from one of the signals at Majestic and directed the auto-driver to Chickpet circle. He obviously was the no-meter auto that we encounter on Bangalore streets. As we got off and started walking through the streets, I, after a very very long time sensed the fear of getting lost on the streets directionless. I repeatedly kept asking my friend to stay in the range of my visibility. She obviously was a pro at walking such busy streets while I was struggling my steps forward.

As I walked behind her, there came a point where I saw a bull pulling the cart coming right on to me. I screamed my lungs out thinking the bull would charge at me anytime because I came in its way!! That was the most scariest moment and I realized I managed to get the attention of few passer-by's due to the screaming.

She also mentioned that we should take a walk in the very famous Raja Market. While the name sounds majestic, it is no way close to it. This place is no less than a maze with so many entries and exits. Every entry/exit had a Raja Market board written in some AD which had so many cobwebs and rust around it. What surprised me was people thronging this place even in the scorching heat with sweat dripping down their foreheads.

As much as it was a thrilling experience for me, I am not very sure if I would be confident and brave to venture this place again.

The final cherry on the cake was the auto ride back. The auto driver who finally agreed to give us a ride had an auto which was completely air-conditioned and no BHP whatsoever. I leave it to one's imagination on how the auto looked and rode us back.

I don't know if I have to thank her or I have a rage towards my friend to let me experience this wonderland. Well for once I will be nice and Thank Her for this madness. Adios!! until I am back from her wedding and perform my duties as a bride's maid!!

Beautiful Bali

When some hear's the name Bali, the few immediate images that come to your mind are the scenic beauty of the place, tropical sun gazing through the mountains, never before seen the sunset. I was no different in expecting this and maybe more.

Talking to a few close friends, I thought I was quite geared up for a relaxing trip. But to have the much desired laid back trip, one must go through some bumpy rides for sure. The carrier plane to Bali crash lands (a little exaggerated here ;)) you at the Denpasar Airport. What you wish is a slow-paced airport and people ready to welcome you, but to my surprise, what I witnessed is the lively airport, bustling with the crowd who were excited to visit this place as much as I was.

I was picked up by my very friendly driver, Kittu, we drove through the sunny day from the airport to the resort. It was a good 45minutes drive from the airport. What I found interesting as we traveled through the roads were the many beautiful buildings some of which were half done and some of them that spoke volumes of the culture of Bali.

The Grand Mirage Resort
I was lucky to visit two of the most spectacular sunset points in Bali just right in time when the sun was setting. First was the Tanah Lot and the second being the Uluwatu. As I explored these places, I realized that the local people in Bali are so warm and welcoming towards tourist. They are so cheerful with their daily chores that it is hard to not have a cheerful day.
Sunset at The Tanah Lot

Uluwatu

For all the seafood lovers, this place has the best salmon to offer. I must say I haven't eaten such a lip-smacking salmon in ages.

Street shopping is a must in Bali to pick a few local offerings. Although the place is filled with tourist, the island is still quite affordable no matter what your taste is. The only catch being, you have to be extremely proficient at bargaining.

In general, Bali enjoys bright, sunny and warm weather all through the year. For all the water sports fanatics, you will be spoilt for choice.

I also had a chance to witness The Devdan Show - a magnificent display of art and culture under one roof. I had minimalist expectations from this show as my past experiences in theatre and art haven't lived my expectations. But The Devdan Show made up for all the loss. The dancers were spot on with their moves. The stage was a grandeur. I was wondering how the 3-hour long show kept the audience yearning for more.

Bali definitely has something to offer for everyone. I have saved my next trip Bali to venture more with a lot more time at hand. 4 days spent there went in a jiffy!!
